#31 Shukuyo (L), Satomi (R) | Dog trainer, vet

1. Why do you guys come up with this exhibition?

Satomi: Shukuyo had been travelling for 4 years and I have been travelling for a year. Shukuyo saw my blog and one day she wrote me an email and we came up with the idea of this photo exhibition.

Shukuyo: We both love animals and that brought us together.

K: So you two travel together to all the places?

Satomi: Actually we travel separately. Shukuyo traveled with her husband but we organise the photo exhibition together as we both like animals.

K: Is this the first time for you guys to organise photo exhibition? Do you guys have other future plans like publishing a book?

Shukuyo: It’s our first time organising this exhibition. We don’t have other plans but we will do the exhibition later in Osaka, and possibly Sendai.

K: As dog trainer, do Shukuyo you only take pictures of dogs or all animals?

Shukuyo: All animals. I love all animals.

2. Is there any message that you two would like to convey through the exhibition?

Satomi: I want people to know how to live with animals. For example, in India, people and animals are of near distance. You can feel that they are equal to each other.

I want people to know how to live with animals.

K: How about the situation in Japan?

Satomi: In Japan, sometimes animals are abandoned on street and I hope people won’t do so after visiting the exhibition.

Shukuyo: Same for me.

I hope people will understand human and animals are equal and people can learn how animals can live in a better way.

K: A better way?

Shukuyo: In Japan, some stray animals are killed by the government and I hope they can live in a better way.

3. Can you share with me your favourite picture or country you have visited?

Satomi: My favourite country is India. For the photograph on the left, you can see equality among different species, while for the right, you can see people and animals are living together, disregarding different culture and society.

Shukuyo: My favourite county is Tanzania. I don’t have a picture in this exhibition though. I can see huge nature and many kinds of animals there. I’m impressed because people and animals know the distance, they are close but are of good distance.

4. I saw that in the introduction, the exhibition is somehow related to the 311 Sendai earthquake? May I ask about that?

Satomi: O the 311 earthquake. Actually before I started my travel plan, I saw the news about the animals in Sendai after the disaster, and I went to Sendai and worked in the shelters to take care of the animals there for 3 years.

K: Do you have any frustration or hesitation before visiting Sendai after the earthquake?

Satomi: I’m not afraid. I wanted to take care of the animals there. Plus I went there in 2014, the situation improved after a few years.

K: Mentioning the animals there, actually a book was sold in Hong Kong describing the situation of the stray animals in Sendai after the earthquake, raising people’s attention not only to the Japanese, but also to the animals living there.
