#38 Carolyn | High school vice principal, Group exercise instructor

1. When and why did you come to Hong Kong?

I arrived Hong Kong in 1997. Back then when I graduated from university, my basketball coach who is also the Education Minister of my province, knew that I wanted to travel and spend time in China. He suggested me visiting Hong Kong first and feel whether I like the culture, and that’s how I’m here and I have been staying here since then.

2. When did you start teaching group exercise classes?

When I was in university!

I used to do running, dancing, cycling and playing basketball. I wanted to be like my brother. I had a chance to teach aerobics in my junior high and I like it!

I had chances to teach while I was studying in university and that provided me some income too.

Then I started teaching group exercise classes in Hong Kong in 2004. In between I taught and paused for some time.

3. My friends are always amazed when I told them my instructor is a vice principal, do you have this “label” in your school too?

Parents of my school don’t know I’m a group exercise instructor. I separate my work life and school life. There was once a teacher of my school attended my class and she was surprised to see me too.

People always think vice principal is different from a teacher. It’s true but I always think I’m more like performing both roles.

To me, life is too short and we need to get fun. Of course if I’m in another level like the principal probably I won’t have much time for teaching classes outside.

4. Despite the busy day time job, what gives you the motivation to teach at the gym at night or during weekend?

I like it. I like group fitness. I like to see the response of participants. I’m especially delighted when someone new attend my class and feel happy. You know you have something to do with that happiness. I always want to take the driver seat than the passenger seat.

5. Is dancing your favourite program to teach?

I think no. As participants I like Body Combat and Body Pump but teaching cycling is my favourite. I like setting the journey with all participants.

6. What do you like best about dancing?

I have always been dancing, like break dance, hip hop. Dance is all about expressing feeling.

7. I always feel that all participants in your class “can dance”. You give them confidence. Do you want to share more on that?

It’s true. I believe everyone can do it. It’s lovely to see the growth of participants. Participants have to believe in themselves that they can do it. In believing in oneself, then they are willing to try and step out of their comfort zone.

8. Is this belief related to your life motto?

Is this a life motto?

I always tell my kids “to be frightened once a day. Get a little scared everyday.” I always think we have to step out of our comfort zone. Try something different, even it is something small, by trying you are focusing on one new thing.
