#117 Amal | Athlete, Group exercise instructor

Foreword: It’s not easy to break gender stereotype like men must be strong and women should be weaker in society. Today I’m sharing the story of Amal, who is always proving that “women can also be strong”.

|Morocco – a blend of everything

Amal begins by introducing Morocco, a country that may not be familiar to many people in Hong Kong. “Many people only know Morocco is in Africa but she is actually a unique mixture of African, Arabian and European culture”. Being close to Europe and located near the Mediterranean Sea, Morocco incorporates various elements into its culture, food, and religion. Amal describes Morocco as a place of hospitality. “Local people would like to guide you. People are super helpful, even if they are not familiar with you”.

|Arriving Hong Kong during the worst period of covid-19

When Amal arrived in Hong Kong, she had to undergo a 21-day quarantine period. This experience was physically and mentally challenging for her, as she is an outgoing person who thrives on social interaction (She is one of the few people I know who have experienced this length of quarantine).

Amal was introduced to Hong Kong by a friend who recommended her as an instructor to the management of her current company. Despite having a good job and family in Morocco, Amal decided to take risk and step out of her comfort zone by relocating to Hong Kong. She highlights “We cannot grow in our comfort zone”.

|Masculine? Feminine?

Amal’s Instagram showcases her training and her embrace of strength. It also at the same time features pictures of her wearing dresses and high heels at social gatherings. Amal challenges the traditional perception of masculinity and femininity. “People often think masculine means being strong, confident, and aggressive, while feminine is seen as soft and submissive." She firmly believes that these qualities are not mutually exclusive, and both men and women can embody strength and femininity simultaneously.

While Amal acknowledges that some people might view her differently due to her muscular physique, she has noticed a shift in mentality. “Many people admire my strength and express their desire to be strong as well" she shares. This change in attitude is not limited to Hong Kong, it is happening in Morocco too.

|A strong lady – any hard time?

Although Amal occasionally faces comments or encounters individuals who try to impose their opinions on her, she is content with her appearance. “I have control over my body, and I am happy with how I look” she asserts.

|Goal setting – the key to being self discipline

Amal’s self-discipline is evident in her daily training routine, even after a long day of teaching classes. She believes that setting goals is essential for maintaining self-discipline and not giving up easily. “We should all move with a goal in mind” she advises. “Instead of relying on motivation, I prefer we believe in persistence and we should all be confident in our ability”.

Amal also attributes her self-discipline to her upbringing, with a strict coach during her youth and unwavering support from her family, especially her mother. “My mum is my top supporter. She always urges me to concentrate on my training”. “I’m also thankful for my coach for always pushing my limit and now I know how to push my members to achieve higher. I know the ability of my students and how I can push them”. As a student of Amal, I totally understand what she meant. She knows who can do a more challenging option and motivates everyone to work till the end.

|Be an inspiration, sharing positive vibe

Amal’s dedication and attitude have inspired many people, who often express their admiration for her. She hopes to convey several messages:

  1. Be confident in your ability. Believe in yourself don’t be afraid of taking challenge.
  2. When having tough time, don’t let it discourage you. Continue to pursue your dream.
  3. Be authentic. Don’t copy from others’ style. Be who you are.
  4. Be a role model for women. Everything is possible. Be a positive example of a strong and successful woman.
  5. We should all support each other. We need to lift each other up.

Approaching the end of the interview, Amal shared her life motto.
“Be that strong girl everyone knows that would make it through the worst. Be that fearless girl that would dare trying everything. Be independent. Be that girl who never back down. Be unstoppable”. Can you now understand why Amal is an inspiration to many people around?

Epilogue: After interviewing Amal, I understand more about the dedication and persistence of Amal. She does not only say about it, she definitely demonstrates “Actions speak louder than words”. Ignoring what others may think about her, she is enjoying being both the “tough trainer” and the “queen” in many people’s eyes.
